Anyway, met them at 10 plus at AMK MRT station. We took the SBS bus to the zoo and arrived within an hour. The whole place was predictably crowded, it being the weekend plus the school hoildays. Lots of noisy families, couples and kids running around.
We paid for our tickets, ate lunch at KFC, planned our route, then set off. The weather at first was downright hot. The sun was scorching and you could feel the heat prickling your skin.
We entered the treetop trail first, which is essentially a high boardwalk over an artificial landscape made to resemble a rainforest. Below us, crocodiles (actually they're called something else but I dunno what else to call them) lounged in the shallows of the river. They hardly moved and we thought they were fake, until one of them blinked. Lol. Since we were also at the level of the treetops, we also spotted a black monkey swinging around and some mousedeer grazing on the areas near the river.
After the treetop trail, we continued onwards to more animals, taking pictures as we went along. When we reached the polar bear exhibit, it was packed. There were no seats in the viewing gallery and we were forced to crane our necks to see over the crowd at the back. There were two polar bears, the enormous Inuka and the slightly smaller mother, Sheba. Inuka was huge, taller than a person, with jaws that could easily crack a human skull. Thank goodness for the glass! We watched in awe as he swam to the glass, eagerly opening his jaws for fish.
Once we were done with the polar bears, we proceeded past more animals and viewed one or two more animal feedings. We finally reached the Children's World, which we found to be in a sorry state of neglect. The animals all looked kinda sad, and the place badly needed refurbishment. Luckily there's some upgrading going on. I find it hard to believe that this is the same place that was so lively and full of kids only a few years ago. I really missed handling the live chicks too. The zoo better do something fast.
When we left the Children's World, it drizzled a little. We made our way back to an eating area near the entrance and rested for some time. After that, we headed for the Splash amphitheatre for the animal show.
And then the weather took the turn for the worst. We arrived at 4pm to get seats for the 5pm show, and at about 4.30pm it began to rain. That turned into a torrential downpour and some people ran for cover. We braved it however, sharing 4 overlapping umbrellas between the 5 of us. When the show started, it consisted of some penguins, floating manatees and an enormous sealion. It only lasted 15 mins though.
We made our way back, detouring to see the baboons and white tigers before we left the zoo. We reached AMK hub and had dinner there. NTUC foodfare is amazing! So much tasty food... I had hokkien mee which was delicious. Yum. Hopefully I can eat there again someday.
Oh well, it was an eventful day. Gotta go sleep now. Damn sleepy.
PS: Thanks Cla for the card and the adorable finger puppet! =D
