I had to do a presentation with some others on this book today, for an event.
As you can see above, the title of the book is "The 5 Love Languages" by Dr Gary Chapman, an experienced marriage counsellor. In it, he proposes that people show love to each other in five different ways. These he calls the five love languages. Of the five, one of them is the most important to the individual and is known as the primary love language.
So the whole idea of the book is that people need to be shown love mostly through their primary love language in order to be satisfied. If not, the relationship breaks down. This theory doesn't just hold for married couples, but for other types of relationships such as friendships and family ties as well.
The five are as follows:
1. Receiving Gifts
Ranges from little tokens of appreciation to the gift of self or presence during a crisis or emergency.
2. Acts of Service
Doing little things to help out a loved one.
3. Words of Affirmation
Kind and humble words to make a loved one feel special.
4. Quality Time
Paying full attention to a loved one while engaging in a meaningful activity together.
5. Physical Touch
Hugs, kisses and ehem, more stuff.
At the end of the book, there's a little quiz for you to take to find out your primary love language. I found out that my primary love language is quality time.
Alternatively, you can try the online quiz here. It's the same as the one in the book. Check it out whenever you're free. It could be quite insightful.
