The other day, I was chatting with Pat online and he told me that the food in his school is terrible.
I wondered how that could possibly be, since surely they of all people could afford to eat properly.
No... he says. Where he's studying it's more of a country area, where choices are more limited that in urban places. The people here eat a lot of fried and overly sweet stuff, and microwave dinners and pizzas are considered a staple diet.
A typical microwave dinner of potato with ham and egg.
He is now lamenting his move away from the food paradise that is Singapore to what can only be described as makan hell.
How bad? Well he sent me a picture of what the Americans call "Chinese cuisine."
Chinese fried noodles.
My initial reaction was eh, that one look like char kway teow hei (aka with sweet sauce) de leh!!
With what I imagine to be a constipated look on his face, he replied that no... it didn't taste like char kway teow at all, but more like absolute crap. The caucasian cook prepared it by dumping noodles, mushrooms, red peppers, onions, fried chicken into a wok with oil and some funny canned dark sauce. The result is this masterpiece.
The stall Pat bought this from is the only one that sells Chinese food in the school, so there's not much in the way of alternatives. They also sell cai fan, though its terrible too. Apparently, you choose the food (cooked but left to turn cold), and the cook will deep fry (even the vegetables) it a second time to re-heat it up. Then, they dump the whole lot with rice. So everything tastes the same... deep fried, oily and gross...
There's an Indian food stall as well, though it's not much better. The meat curry consists of some unidentifiable chunks of flesh floating in some weird, horrible watery curry. The brani rice is rice mixed with such a large quantity of curry leaves (yeah I know leaves) that it looks like rice added to leaves rather than leaves cooked with rice.
So all in all, the food sucks. If any Asian comes to live in the US, the best thing to do would be to open an Asian restaurant. Heck, even fried rice would sell like hotcakes.
PS: I have an odd craving from chocolate cake now, thanks to some people. = =
