Went with Linghui to watch it today and let me just say that every dollar was well spent. Even if you don't really fancy sci-fi or know nuts about the series, the action and plot are enough to keep you on the edge of your seat. The story is pretty interesting too... I won't say much... but it involves time travel, singularities and a floating ball of red goo.
J.J Abrams (the guy who directed "Lost") did a great job on this movie, making it fresh, humourous and snazzy. The leaps and bounds in CGI technology have made the space battles even more spectacular as well. Think spaceships ploughing through debris in space, dodging missiles and fighting back with lasers.
The movie revolves around the main characters of James T. Kirk and Spock (half-human and half-vulcan) and how they came to meet in Starfleet Academy (based in San Fransisco). The two hate each others' guts at first, but through a series of unexpected events involving Spock and a strange Romulan vessel, they form a firm friendship. There are also the characters of Uhura, Sulu, Scotty, Bones and Chekhov. Though mostly space cadets, they rise to the occasion and show veteran-like professionalism as the situation becomes dire.
One interesting fact that stuck out was the level of human drama involved in the movie. In previous Trek movies, whenever a Federation vessel took a hit, all the audience saw was everyone in the bridge being jolted about and people inside falling over. In this movie, the impact of the damage was defininitely more realistic. Pipes collapsed, fires broke out, and a missile even resulted in a hull breach and crew members being sucked into space. People died and many were injured, and you really got the sense that the ship was well and truly in jeopardy as it came under attack.
The movie was great and all, but being shallow girls we couldn't help but ask...

The answer was unanimous.
SPOCK!
Won't say much... but just that in the movie, he's a pretty good kisser.*wink*
Please please please let there be a sequel.
